Our First Book is Available Now

In the Summer of 2021, we found ourselves boarding a flight across the Atlantic with no return date in sight. With all of our possesions limited to what fit in a carry-on, our focus was on making room for the important things in life, simplifying, slowing down, and seeing how people do life in other parts of the world. Rather than dropping in during the span of a vacation before racing back to work, we decided to go all-in and immerse oursleves in the day-to-day of places we barely knew--from the deserts of Andalucia to the islands of the Adriatic. Told in vignettes and photos, Europe in One-Way Tickets is an exploration of what life could look like and does look like--if you’re willing to slow down and look.

The Design

Documenting a trip or experience well is a difficult balance. If you’re not intentional enough, details of memories will begin to fade. Lean into it too heavily, though, and you’ll run the risk of taking yourself out of the moment. In the age of travel vlogs and 15-second reels, I found myself gravitating more so toward pen and paper. I always had either my camera or phone on me to document the moment, and I could steal away on a cafe terrace or coffee shop whenever I chose to try and jot down some of the recent highlights. When we began in Spain, I was only writing a paragraph or two a week—just enough to keep the memories alive. But as time progressed, I found a rhythm between doing and reflecting; through that process, I not only appreciated the experiences more in retrospect but began to train my eye for what to appreciate in the coming days.

There’s something timeless about seeing your work in print.

When we returned to the U.S., our experience was documented loosely in scribbled journals and photos. I knew I wanted to preserve the experience well—something that not only we could look back over through the years but something that we could pull down from the shelf for the kids and grandkids one day. That’s where Europe in One-Way Tickets began.

The book utilizes a layflat design. Each spread is printed seamlessly and glued to bound pages removing the distraction of the binding. For this project, we wanted to do include something unique that tied the whole experience together. We were able to collaborate with the illustrator and cartographer, Alex Hotchin, and the book includes her custom illustrations.
